How it is calculated

Mean = Σ values ÷ n

Weighted = Σ (value × weight) ÷ Σ weights

The median sorts the numbers and takes the middle one (or the average of the two middle ones if the count is even).

Assumptions and limitations

  • Use a period for decimals (8.5). Commas are treated as separators between numbers.
  • If no value repeats, there is no mode.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate an average?

Add all the values and divide by how many there are. The average of 7, 8 and 9 is (7 + 8 + 9) ÷ 3 = 8.

What is the difference between mean, median and mode?

The mean is the arithmetic average. The median is the middle value when the numbers are sorted. The mode is the value that appears most often.

How do I calculate a weighted average or a final grade?

Multiply each value by its weight, add the results and divide by the sum of the weights. Exam 90 worth 60% and project 80 worth 40%: (90 × 60 + 80 × 40) ÷ 100 = 86.
