Frequently asked questions
Is one dog year really seven human years?
No. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, for a medium-sized dog the first year equals about 15 human years, the second about 9 and each year after about 5.
Does size matter?
Yes. Larger breeds tend to have shorter lifespans and age faster later in life, while small breeds often live longer. This calculator uses the guideline for a medium-sized dog.
How do cat years work?
A common veterinary guideline is about 15 human years for the first year, 9 for the second and about 4 for each year after.
